Duties: The Physician Assistant – Outpatient at Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive Disease Institute in Cleveland, Ohio works with subspecialties of pouch disorders in Gastroenterology and provides high quality health care to patients with inflammatory bowel disease and pouch related disorders. Responsibilities of the Physician Assistant – Outpatient include: conduct thorough medical histories; identify and capture patient information related to specific research studies; perform complete physical examinations; initiate appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of illness, and scrutinize lab data on new and former clinical patients and hospital admissions to establish a record of the patient’s current health status and to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan with direct review by a physician; perform and interpret, at least to the point of recognizing deviations from normal, common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes; provide information and answer routine patient questions regarding their disease, including preventative health maintenance topics such as diet, weight, smoking and topics related to medical specialty, with basic recommendations; educate patients regarding their disease, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards; medical record keeping including completion of appropriate patient medical chart, transcription of lab data and routine correspondence, as directed and reviewed by physician; refer patients to physicians as appropriate for consultation of for specialized health resources and treatment; ensure continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team or with other specialty areas.

The goal of the Tissue Biospecimen Resources Center (TBRC) is to facilitate the acquisition, storage, and distribution of high quality biospecimens to qualified Cleveland Clinic and outside investigators for research purposes.

Activities of the TBRC are broadly divided into those that take place in the Procurement Lab (closely affiliated with the Surgical Desk), and those that take place in the Post-Procurement Lab. In general, most activities related to acquisition and immediate distribution of tissue to researchers occur in the retrieval and distribution of specimens from archive, quality assurance, and new projects (i.e. TMA preparation, laser capture microdissection, DNA and RNA derivative preparation), and distribution of unstained slides for clinical trials take place in the post-procurement lab.

SUMMARY: Directions the operations within this center.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director will be responsible for supervising activities in both areas, including among other things, the following:

I. Procurement Lab:

a. Working with the administrative management of the Surgical Desk, supervise the process of tissue procurement, including:

i. Documentation of variables that influence specimen quality

ii. Documentation of Informed Consent

iii. Acquisition, preservation and storage of tissue and fluids for research without compromising diagnosis

iv. Distribution of fresh and archived tissue to approved internal and external investigators

b. Working with IT Specialist, administrate BIGR, the dedicated biospecimen informatics system

c. Supervise fulfilling tissue requests of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) for research institute

II. Post-Procurement Lab

a. Coordinate review of new research protocols with the Medical Director of the biorepository

b. Supervise the distribution of tissue and/or microscope slides for clinical trials and other studies

c. Supervisor the major project of freezer consolidation, involving re-boxing of existing frozen specimens and entering selected fields of clinical information and freezer location into BIGR.

d. Develop quality control procedures for archived specimens. This will include working with technicians and the Medical Director to evaluate frozen sections of archived samples as well as analytical testing of DNA and RNA. Work with ePathology to coordinator integrating scanned images of QA frozen sections into BIGR.

e. Continue development of Tissue Microarrays (TMAs) from paraffin-embedded tissues.

f. Continue development of Laser Capture Microdissection to facilitate genomic evaluation of individual cells or groups of cells.

III. CC System-Wide and External Activities

a. Provide occasional introductory presentations of Q&A sessions with researchers throughout CCF.

b. Develop Standard Operating Procedures and Policies within the framework of CAP guidelines as well as Best Practices recommended by the NCI and ISBER.

c. Work with the Medical Director to establish agreements with external investigators and companies with respect to tissue distribution and cost recovery.

d. Supervise charging investigators for activities of the Tissue Biospecimen Resource Center.

e. Participate as a member on the Tissue Biospecimen Resource Steering Committee

f. Expand and improve the TBRC section of the RT-PLMI intranet site.

g. Maintain our participation in the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) and represent the TBRB at Semi-annual meetings.

Directs in the organization and management of center activities. Partners with medical leaders to implement strategic initiatives. Directs the selection and placement of new employees, performance evaluations and corrective actions. Supports clinical departments through active engagement in department’s top priorities. Teaches best practices within their functional expertise to all levels within the Institute. Coaches administrative and medical leaders. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Health Care Administration or related field.
