GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the direction of the pathologist. The Pathologist’s Assistant is responsible for the management of laboratory testing in the designated sections. The position requires intimate knowledge of both department and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of pathology services. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related science.

2. Understand safety rules and regulations, management techniques, laws and the legal interpretations, which influence the practice of Medical Technology within the Laboratory and Pathology Department.

3. Knowledge of anatomy, pathology, medical terminology and physiology sufficient to identify, dissect, and describe certain surgical specimens. Knowledge of dissection, sectioning techniques and appropriate procedure of handling tissue. Demonstrated job knowledge of histopathologic techniques and methods.

4. Knowledgeable of methods used to obtain clinical history including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc. when indicated.

5. Familiarity with dictation and dictation equipment and computer are beneficial.

B. Required Length and Type of Experience

1. Minimum five (5) years clinical experience

2. Three (3) years experience as a surgical pathology technician to include gross examination of tissue.

3. One (1) year Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement/Performance Improvement experience.

4. Working knowledge of OSHA requirements concerning chemical hygiene and blood-borne pathogens.

C. Required Licensure, Certification or Registry

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs surgical desk functions following the guidelines of surgical pathology techs.

2. Communicates with Manager, Assistant Director, Pathologists, employees and other departments to coordinate efforts, meet special needs and address problems or concerns.

3. Responds to beeper communications within appropriate time frame.

4. Assists with cutting and processing frozen section slides whenever necessary.

5. Assists with processing, cutting and staining of histology slides when necessary.

6. Examines, describes, dissects and sections selected biopsy and surgical resection specimens under the direction of staff pathologist, including dictation of salient gross features of these specimens.

7. Determines area of the gross specimens to be samples for microscopic analysis and cuts area into appropriate sized sections for further processing. Analyzes certain gross specimens and biopsy specimens: identifies and measures, weights and describes specimens according to established guidelines. Performs sectioning and dictates gross features of these specimens.

8. Identifies in collaboration with pathology staff, areas likely to be involved by neoplastic/inflammatory conditions in surgical specimens, such as colon, breast, spleen, lymph nodes, lung, and uterus specimens; processes specimens such as conization of cervix.

9. Assists pathology staff to select certain tissues to be submitted for frozen section analysis.

10. Checks refrigeration for late specimens from previous day. Performs accessioning functions for all specimens received; identifies specimen, assigns accession number, logs in and enter pertinent information into the computer terminal. Assures appropriate specimen accession and numbering of all surgical specimens.

11. May photograph and maintain records for gross specimens that require photography. Prepares all solutions, fixatives and stains; decalcifies all mineralized specimens. Maintains records of all discarded and saved specimens. Prepares gross specimens for maintenance and storage.

12. Checks equipment for proper operation, calibrated if necessary. Maintains all equipment and instruments used at the surgical desk, pr CLIA requirements.

13. Assists, initiates and institutes specialized procedures of duties as designated by the Medical Director or staff pathologist to include administrative and teaching functions.

14. Assist in the preparation and performance of postmortem examinations.

15. Obtains patient’s charts and other pertinent data (x-rays scans, etc.) for review with the pathologist.

16. Confers with the pathologist to identify those special techniques and procedures which will be necessary e.g., histochemical, immunofluorescence, toxicological, viral, or electron microscopic studies, cultures, and smears, etc., and notifies all personnel directly involved.

17. Under the direction of the pathologist, perform certain parts of the postmortem presection including evisceration, recording of data such as organ weights, presence of body fluids, gross anatomic finding, etc., prepares selection tissue sections for microscopic examination to include the preparation of frozen and permanent sections for light, electron and immunofluorescence microscopy. Obtains biological specimens for analysis (blood cultures, viral cultures, toxicological material, etc.) and performs special techniques as directed by the pathologist. Photographs the body, organs, slides and other pertinent items.

18. With the staff pathologist assures proper restoration of the body for acceptable release to the funeral director, indicating any biohazards such as contagious disease, radioactive implants, etc. which may be present. Responsible for assuring the completion of the autopsy protocol correct coding and filing of protocols and report, filing photographic and microscopic slides and maintenance of other anatomical pathology reports and data.

19. Maintains completed and up-to-date documentation and files at all times, including product and service quotes.

20. Performs any other duties as assigned.
