Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Summary: Performs diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound-waves for patients of all ages as directed by physicians. Maintains patient safety.
Job Responsibilities: Performs ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular). Consults with referring physician regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis; reviews charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam. Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exam to ensure understanding and cooperation. Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam. May assist with scheduling of patients. Schedules all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures. Monitors all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations; performs preliminary research on patient when preparations are not provided; determines priority of patients based on the daily schedules. Acquires, archives, transmits and prints images via PACS - when applicable, completes after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork - immediately reports any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator. Knowledgeable in billing via RIS. Performs checks on ultrasound equipment to assure proper function of equipment and notifies clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions. Ensures exam rooms are adequately supplied with linen and related medical supplies. Assists with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents; assists with in-service education of staff members. Assists with orienting new employees to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols; provides demonstration of ultrasound equipment for staff and visitors. May be required to rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations. Assists in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment; maintains state-of-the-art knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums. RDMS must be maintained and in good standing. Other duties as assigned.
Education: Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing.
Experience: Minimum of one year experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) must be obtained within one year of hire. RDMS certified in Abdominal and OB/GYN imaging within one year of hire required. additional certification in vascular is preferred. State license if required by state law. CPR certification required.
Physical Requirements: Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.
