Summary: Demonstrates knowledge to assist pre- and during dialysis procedures including femoral cannulation and performs dialysis and treatments with physicians orders. Responsible for patient care needs, monitoring and documentation for all Hemodialysis procedures. Demonstrates the ability to remove femoral shealths and administer medications, including thrombolytics. Provides pre-and post procedue care to patients within the Hemodialysis Unit.
Job Responsibilities: Performs ongoing monitoring and evaluation of patient's status via EKG, pulse oximetry, and non invasive BP. Recognizes and responds accordingly to emergency situations. Assists in collecting specimens from arterial or venous sites for blood gases, coagulation and kidney function status. Prepares sterile procedure table and drapes patient appropriately for all procedures. Applies sterile dressings to percutaneous sites with catheters. Administers blood products as ordered by physician. Responsible for patient care needs, monitoring and documentation for all hemodialysis procedures. Operates monitoring equipment. Assesses patient's condition pre-, intra-, and post procedure and discusses complications and plan of care with physician. Reviews and interprets lab and EKG results. Notifies physician of significant results. Performs point-of-care testing as ordered by the physician. Anticipates needs of patient, including continual pain assessment during procedure. Circulates, scrubs, removes femoral cannule and administer medications. Maintains knowledge of hemodialysis catheters. Maintains knowledge of current and new procedure techniques and adapts patient care needs accordingly. Maintains and updates knowledge of indications, uses, adverse effects and administration of frequently use medications (Oral, topical and intravenous) including anticoagulants and thrombolytics. Responds promptly to adverse events (i.e. vasovagal) when removing venous sheaths. Provides pre-and post-procedure care to patients in hemodialysis. Initiates patient safety protocols relative to patient identification, allergies and sedation. Performs venipuncture, blood draws and administers antibiotics and infusion therapies ordered by the physician. Facilitates the coordination of bed assignments and calls report to nursing units. Assists in prepping and draping patients for venous line removals. Ensures clear and concise discharge instructions to the patient as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Education: Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
Experience: Minimum of two years recent Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse experience, or three years recent experience as a Certified Dialysis Technician, Bonnet certification preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio. BCLS required. ACLS preferred. ACLS to be obtained within the first year of hire.
Physical Requirements: Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires normal or corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases and body fluids. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
