EMG Technologist Registered:

JOB SUMMARY: Instructs and oversees the performance of nerve conduction studies by non-registered technicians. Assists with EMG research studies. Performs maintenance functions for the laboratory.

Job Responsibilities:Operates the nerve conduction instrumentation; ensures proper adjustments are made for accurate recording procedures. Selects nerves to be studied by reviewing request and patient history. Prepares patient for EMG examination. Records all pertinent test data at each stage of study.

Instructs in the use of instrumentation, technique of electrode application, nerve stimulation measurements and possible causes of error. Relates procedure to the referring diagnosis; checks results of nerve conductions performed by others; teaches data interpretation.

Maintains clean linen for each patient; cleans EMG/QPN rooms, electrodes and equipment. Ensures order and cleanliness of general laboratory areas. Replenishes supplies. Ensures maintenance of equipment and instrumentation in EMG and QPN labs and EMG exam rooms.

Keeps accurate log of all patients in EMG and QPN lab. Assists staff with financial tickets, reports, and chart flow.

Other duties as assigned.

Education: High School Diploma or GED, Associate's Degree in an accredited END program or minimum of two years of college with some human anatomy and physiology. Working knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology and science sufficient to assist with the interpretation of test results and train non-registered technicians.

Knowledge of all EMG techniques to perform research, demonstrations and evaluate procedures.

Licensure/ Certification/ Registration: Registry from American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists.

Complexity of Work: Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Personal Protective Equipment: Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Required Experience: Minimum two years experience as an EMG technician non-registered at CCF or a comparable laboratory is required to obtain the required knowledge for registry exam.

EMG Technician Non-Registered:

Job Summary: Performs nerve conduction studies for patients. Assists with instructing other staff, residents, physicians and technicians in proper laboratory procedures. Maintains order within the laboratory. May assist with research studies as assigned.

Job Responsibilities: Operates the nerve conduction instrumentation; ensures proper adjustments are made for accurate recording procedures. Selects nerves to be studied by reviewing request and patient history. Prepares patient for EMG examination.

Performs miscellaneous clerical functions related to the laboratory. Obtains patients' EMG reports and transmits to physicians on request; mails reports to referring physicians. Maintain files on all request for reports.

Maintains clean linen for each patient; cleans EMG rooms and equipment. Replenishes lab supplies in examination rooms.

Other duties as assigned.

Education: High School Diploma or GED, Associates Degree in an accredited END program or at least two years of college with some human anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of basic physiology, anatomy and science to locate nerve locations and understand electromyograph test results.

Licensure/ Certification/ Registration: Must obtain certification as a Registered Nerve Conduction Study Tech within two years of hire date.

Complexity of Work: Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills. Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful

Required Experience: Completion of Cleveland Clinic six month trainee program with demonstrated skill in the basic functions of the laboratory or one (1) year past experience in a comparable EMG laboratory at another location.

EMG Technician Trainee:

Job Summary: Receives training and instruction in the performance of nerve conduction studies. This consists of electrical stimulation and measurement of nerves and muscles for the purpose of diagnosis of neuromuscular disease.

Gains an understanding of the basic concepts of Neurophysiology pertinent to the performance of nerve conduction studies. Ensures patient safety and confidentiality. Assists staff with patient care during electromyography as needed.

Job Responsibilities: Prepares patient for EMG examination; provides instruction and explanation of test; screens for contraindications (medications, anti-coagulation, latex allergies etc); records pertinent medical history.

Responds to patient's questions as needed. Operates EMG instruments, ensures proper adjustments are maintained for accurate recordings. Selects nerves to be studied by reviewing request and history. Applies electrodes to proper locations (nerves & muscles) and administers electrical stimuli to specific nerves. Makes surface measurements and calculates conduction velocities based on results obtained from nerve conduction instrumentation. Continues the test as required by obtained results. Records all pertinent data at each phase of study.

Maintains equipment and supplies. Maintains clean linen for each patient; cleans EMG rooms and equipment and surrounding support area. Replenishes lab supplies in examination rooms, etc.

Performs miscellaneous clerical functions related to the laboratory. Provides printed table of results and waveforms. Keeps daily log of patients, procedures, and staff. Assists staff with charts, requisitions, and billing tickets. Post daily schedule. Files, stores and retrieves records (hard copies and electronic copies) according to lab procedure.

Participates in learning through hands-on, informal lectures and individual study.

Other duties as assigned.

Education: Completion of high school, associates degree in an accredited END program or at least 2 yrs of college with some human anatomy and physiology

Licensure/ Certification/Registration: CPR certification required or must be obtained within one month of hire.

Complexity of Work:

Requires critical thinking, decisive judgment. Must be able to work in a dynamic ever changing environment and take appropriate action.

Required Experience:

Minimum six months direct patient care experience. One year post secondary education in a related field may substitute for experience. Experience in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics or physical medicine preferred.
