Summary: Plans, organizes, directs, and controls the system wide health information management coding function.

Job Responsibilities: Responsible for personnel management, strategic planning, and process improvement activities. Participates in the development of departmental budget; prepares budget variance reports. Actively participates in the evaluation, selection, and purchase of information systems for HIS Coding Services and hospital wide systems. Acts as a department liaison for hospital and medical staff in the area of coding, DRG's, APC's and chargemaster. Other duties as assigned.

Education: Associate's Degree in Health Information Management with demonstrated management and reimbursement/revenue cycle experience required. Bachelor Degree in Health Information Management strongly preferred.

Experience: This position requires at least 3 years of supervisory experience in a Health Information Management Department in an acute care setting with management of the coding process. Previous experience with revenue/reimbursement methodologies strongly preferred. Demonstrated PC proficiency required which includes Windows based products, decision support systems, and coding systems. Experience with HBOC McKesson and 3M coding systems preferred. Must have excellent communication skills, a good working knowledge of hospital-based information systems, JCAHO, and other accreditation and regulatory agencies, and knowledge of the hospital revenue cycle. Administrative, analytical, planning, and problem solving skills, in addition to attention to detail and the ability to direct and motivate people are required. Thorough understanding of HIPAA, the legal and risk management implications of health information and coding compliance guidelines are essential.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Successful completion of the American Health Information Management credentialing examination required. Registered Health Information Administrator preferred.

Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity to operate office equipment. May require periods of sitting, standing and the ability to walk to various locations throughout the Foundation to attend meetings; must have normal or correction vision to clearly communicate verbally by phone or in person.
