OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT (CERTIFIED)

Summary: Performs clerical/maintenance duties and basic patient care as directed by technician, physician or supervisor.

Job Responsibilities: Under direction of supervisor, physician and/or technician receives and prepares patients for examination or treatment. May perform routine screening tests. Documents patient information in the patient medical record. Performs stocking, maintenance and other duties as assigned, including maintaining exam rooms, equipment and supplies. Other duties as assigned.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of the written exam for Certified Ophthalmic Assistant. Recent graduate an Ophthalmic Technology Program (not yet COT certified).

Experience: Minimum 2 years experience in an ophthalmic setting.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC. Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds. May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting. Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.

OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT (NON-CERTIFIED)

Summary: Performs clerical/maintenance duties and basic patient care as directed by technician, physician or supervisor.

Job Responsibilities: Under direction of supervisor, physician and/or technician receives and prepares patients for examination or treatment. May perform routine screening tests. Documents patient information in the patient medical record. Performs stocking, maintenance and other duties as assigned, including maintaining exam rooms, equipment and supplies. Other duties as assigned.

Education: High School Diploma. Knowledge of medical terminology.

Experience: Minimum of one year in a clinical setting with direct patient care contact. Additional formal education or training in ophthalmology may substitute for some or all of the stated experience.

Training in ophthalmology is strongly preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: None required.
