GENERAL SUMMARY
Reporting to the Nursing Administration, this position requires knowledge of all aspects of patient care services work. Effective skills in one-to-one, small group, and large group communication; conceptual thinking; negotiation; political process; marketing and public relations; budgeting and forecasting; project management; personnel management; materials management; technical writing; coaching; and planning. Develop and implement quality management protocols. Provide guidelines for proper direction and motivation to all personnel under his/her jurisdiction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
2. BSN required
3. Masters preferred
4. Cognizant of the physical and general characteristics of the various age related groups.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing theory, diseases and therapeutics and is able to recognize changes in patient status and report pertinent information to physicians.
6. Clinical skills commensurate with allowed scope of responsibility.
7. Ability to work independently, demonstrates neatness, organizational skills and deadline awareness
8. Knowledge of current nursing management theory and practices
9. Demonstrates knowledge of infection control practices
B. Required Length and Type of Experience
1. Minimum of 5 years progressive management experience in health care setting.
2. Knowledge of Florida Nurse Practice Act, JCAHO requirements
3. Knowledge of budget preparation and management principles
4. Knowledge of quality improvement practices
C. Required Licensure, Certification or Registry
1. Current Florida Registered Professional Nurse License
2. Current BLS certification required.
3. Current ACLS certification preferred.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Establishes quality improvement, fiscal productivity and patient satisfaction goals and objects in conjunction with upper management.
2. Organizes the functions of the departments through the appropriate assignment of responsibilities, delegation of authority, and overall direction of workflow processes.
3. Monitors and evaluates the activities of the department employees and provides managements coaching, guidance, and on-the-job training and retraining, as necessary, to ensure operational efficiency and adherence to policies and procedures.
4. Communicate with administration, medical staff, employees and other departments to coordinate efforts, meet special needs and address problems of concerns.
5. Concurrently monitors employee and department performance to ensure adherence to policies and procedures, time line and regulatory requirements.
6. Reviews all department policies and procedures and revises as needed. Develops, implements and monitors new policies and procedures as needed.
7. Screens, interviews, and selects individuals for open positions within the department.
8. Completes and conducts performance evaluations for all staff under their direct supervision after three months employment and annually; submits completed evaluations to Human Resources department by the due date.
9. Reviews and approves all performance evaluations completed and conducted by other department supervisors or managers.
10. Conducts monthly department meetings and documents employee attendance using appropriate format and covers required topics.
11. Ensures that department employees attend all mandatory and department in-services.
12. Counsels employees as needed regarding job performance or related concerns.
13. Develops and monitors work improvement programs as needed to correct poor job performance.
14. Delegates responsibilities when appropriate to provide job growth and learning opportunities.
15. Evaluates existing systems and processes, initiates changes and improvements and makes suggestions to upper management.
16. Conducts regular nurse manager meetings for the purpose of staffing goal setting and performance review.
17. Attends all administrative meetings.
18. Ensures that there are updated job descriptions for all Division of Nursing personnel.
19. Sets performance goals and works collaboratively to set meaningful objectives.
20. Provides suggestions and necessary resources for the facilitation of goal achievement.
21. Implements systems to track performance against goals and holds regular meetings to discuss progress
22. Maintains an objective view to the conflicts of others and allows for brainstorming of positive alternatives.
23. Consistently operates with integrity, honesty and keeps commitments.
24. Supportive of others and treats others with dignity, respect and fairness.
25. Utilizes chain of command as needed.
26. Provides final approval of expenses including payroll.
27. Investigates causes of grievances, complaints made by patients and personnel.
28. Responds to beeper communication within appropriate time frame.
29. Remains calm and assists staff to function effectively during stressful situations.
30. Assists in the process which ensures that patient care is delivered in accordance with established, State, Federal and JCAHO, ANA policies, procedures, regulations, ethics and standards.
31. Assures staff compliance in the completion of initial and annual competencies.
32. Plays an integral role in the building of a successful management team by developing and coaching others and by being a positive role model.
33. Performs other duties as assigned.
